Voters to decide five insurance commissioner races today

As the nation goes about selecting its next President, five states are also holding elections for insurance commissioner today, November 8, 2016.

Although a majority of insurance commissioners are appointed as nonpartisan officeholders, 11 are elected in partisan elections. 

Going into the 2016 elections, there are five Democratic commissions and six Republican commissioners, plus Ohio, where the director of insurance is a nonpartisan position currently held by Republican Mary Taylor, who also serves as Ohio’s Lieutenant Governor.

In the 39 states that appoint an insurance commissioner, 37 are appointed by the Governor and two states (New Mexico and Virginia), appoint via a multi-member commission.
