U.S. Senate Commerce Committee Holds Hurricane Forecasting, Mitigation Study Hearing

The United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation held a hearing entitled “Weathering the Storm:  The Need for a National Hurricane Initiative,” on Tuesday, July 28, in Washington, D.C.

The Hearing was designed to highlight and provide a discussion forum about current Federal research in order to better understand the basic science of hurricanes, determine existing data gaps and examine how to improve hurricane forecasting.
 
In addition, the discussion included a focus on hurricane damage mitigation through the improvement of building codes and the maintenance of coastal areas as buffers from storm surges and beach erosion.

  • Leslie Chapman-Henderson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, Inc.
  • Franklin W. Nutter, President, Reinsurance Association of America
