Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Director Electra Theodorides-Bustle is stepping down for an unspecified opportunity to work in the private sector.

She headed the highway safety agency for more than two years.

Theodorides-Bustle sent a resignation letter to Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday, saying she was leaving for the new job, but didn’t say what it was.

“I am looking forward to an opportunity that has been presented to me in the private sector with new challenges and new adventures waiting on that horizon,” Theodorides-Bustle said in the letter.

Theodorides-Bustle was an assistant commissioner at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement before taking the job heading the highway agency, which includes driver’s licensing and the Highway Patrol, among other duties.

At FDLE, Theodorides-Bustle was essentially the agency’s lobbyist at the Capitol.

She also has served as deputy general counsel at the Florida Sheriffs Association, an assistant general counsel at HSMV, and was a captain and major in the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

The Highway Safety director has to be appointed by the governor and Cabinet. The agency, which has 4,500 employees, is one of the largest safety agencies in the country.
