The News Service of Florida–November 13, 2009
The Florida Department of Transportation will hold an online seminar Tuesday to discuss proposed changes to statewide toll rates and the rules for establishing a Toll-by-Plate electronic toll collection system.
The Florida Turnpike Enterprise is planning to implement an all-electronic collection mechanism on the southern 47 miles of the Turnpike in Miami-Dade County, with plans to follow with system wide implementation. The new Toll-by-Plate system will record an image of a vehicle’s license so that the registered owner of the car can be billed. Drivers would have the option to establishing a Toll-by-Plate account or waiting for a bill in the mail, with an extra administrative charge. If the system is implemented, the DOT plans to remove cash tolls on the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike in Miami-Dade County.
Tuesday’s webinar will present the logistics of the program and allow the public to comment on the proposed changes. Registration for the seminar is required at: http://www.floridasturnpike.com/all-electronictolling/publicmeeting.html. The meeting will also be broadcast at DOT facilities in Ocoee, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Bartow and Miami.
