The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Reverses Position, Supports HB 5603
May 27, 2010
After asking Governor Charlie Crist for a veto, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (“AFSCME”) is now supporting HB 5603, which relates to workers’ compensation and Florida’s risk management programs, according to The Florida Current.
AFSCME reversed its position after state workers’ compensation officials promised the union that its concerns about injured workers facing higher out-of-pocket expenses for prescription medications would not be realized if HB 5603 were to become law.
Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink has asked Crist to sign the bill, which she believes will save as much as $34 million a year for employers and help state agencies to better prevent workplace injuries.
Governor Crist has until Friday, May 28, 2010 to either sign, veto or allow the bill to become law without his signature.
