MEMORANDUM
TO: Members of the Florida House of Representatives
FROM: Dean Cannon, Speaker-Designate
DATE: November 15, 2010
RE: Committee Chair Assignments
The structure of the 2010-2012 Florida House represents a transparent, defined committee process that will allow us to focus on the goal of solving problems for the people of Florida.
Committee Chairs must be fair and honest brokers in the process, must show discernment, and must be students of public policy. A Chair must take the time to listen to opposing sides of important issues and guide the Committee to focus on quality legislation. A Chair should also be a mentor and guide to the subcommittee Chairs and to the Members within the committee structure. With that in mind, I am announcing the following appointments as Committee Chairs, all of whom have proven their leadership skills and earned my full trust and faith through consistency, hard work, and good decision making.
Representative Dorothy Hukill, Chair, Economic Affairs Committee, which deals with growth management, economic development, transportation, professional regulation, insurance and banking regulations, gaming, and consumer affairs.
Representative William Proctor, Chair, Education Committee, which oversees both Pre K-12 education and postsecondary education.
Representative Steve Precourt, Chair, Finance & Tax Committee, which deals with issues concerning all state and local taxes and select non-tax revenue sources.
Representative Robert Schenck, Chair, Health & Human Services Committee, which deals with programs, regulations, and systems that purchase or provide health care, health care coverage, or social services.
Representative William Snyder, Chair, Judiciary Committee, which considers civil and criminal law issues, public safety, and the administration of justice through the court system.
Representative Will Weatherford, Chair, Redistricting Committee, which considers the reapportionment and redistricting plans for Florida’s State Legislative and Congressional districts.
Representative Seth McKeel, Chair, State Affairs Committee, which oversees agriculture, environmental protection, energy, utilities and telecommunications regulation, and state agency governance.
These appointments, along with my previous appointments of Representatives Denise Grimsley and Gary Aubuchon to chair Appropriations and Rules respectively and my selection of Representatives John Legg and Carlos Lopez-Cantera as Speaker pro tempore and Majority Leader, round out the senior leadership team of the Florida House for the 2010-2012 Legislature.
I will appoint subcommittee chairs before the week of December 6. For those of you interested in chairing a subcommittee, I look forward to speaking with you and also encourage you to discuss your interest with the relevant committee chairs as well.
