State of Emergency declared in Hillsborough County

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Officials in Hillsborough County are declaring a state of emergency following last week’s storms, so $2.2 million for debris cleanup, rehabilitation of damaged homes and temporary housing assistance can become available to residents.

Hillsborough County’s Emergency Policy Group unanimously voted to declare the emergency on Monday. The group consists of the county administrator, county commissioners, sheriff and mayors of Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City.

The storms did an estimated $1.4 million in damage in unincorporated areas of Hillsborough County. A total of 124 structures sustained minor damage, 41 had major damage and one mobile home was destroyed. Most of the damaged homes in the unincorporated areas were in Progress Village.

In Tampa, 13 commercial buildings were damaged. Total damage to commercial buildings was estimated at $500,000.
