Speaker Schedules Additional Week for House Council Budget Reduction Reviews

Jan 10, 2008

House Speaker Marco Rubio issued the Memorandum below on Thursday, January 10, 2008 announcing the scheduling of an additional week of meetings for the various Florida House of Representatives Councils in order to work through recommendations for initial budget reductions for consideration by the entire House during the first week of the Regular Session.  Speaker Rubio stated his hope that these additional meetings will establish a sound base from which to further adjust state expenditures as the 2009 fiscal budget is developed in the General Appropriations Act.

Re: Additional Council Week

It is my intention to hold an additional round of council meetings during the week of February 11. This will be in addition to the council and committee meetings already scheduled in February. For those of you appointed to House Councils, please make room on your calendar to participate. Substantive Councils will be allotted time to meet Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday (February 12-14) and the Policy and Budget Council will be allocated time to meet on Friday, February 15, if necessary. A proposed schedule for that week will be forthcoming from the Rules and Calendar Council.

As Chairman Sansom has explained to us all, the budget situation is deteriorating; it is therefore critical that we begin to take serious steps to reduce the recurring expenditures. Therefore, I am allocating a full day for each council to meet to work through their recommendations for initial budget reductions for consideration by the entire House during the first week of the Regular Session. It is my hope that these cuts will establish a sound base from which we will need to further adjust state expenditures as we develop the 2009 fiscal budget in the General Appropriations Act.
