PILS Alert: Retardation Advocacy Group Seeks Bar Support in Preventing Facilities Closures
Feb 16, 2009
A Message from PILS Chairman Maria Elena Abate, Esq.:
Because legal guardianship is governed by state law and state-by-state variances, “Voice of the Retarded (VOR),” an advocacy organization for people with mental retardation and their families, has asked the American Bar Association for its nationwide support in preventing the closure of specialized residential facilities housing those with profound developmental disabilities.
For your information, the attached communication from VOR has been forwarded to each State Bar Association, including the Florida Bar.
Meanwhile, VOR has asked that specific ABA Commissions review its concerns. According to VOR, members of the legal community are in a unique position to address this issue.
Updates will be provided as they become available.
