My Safe Florida Home Advisory Council Holds Organizational Meeting

Feb 4, 2008

On Monday, February 4, 2008, the My Safe Florida Home program (“MSFH”) Advisory Council (“Council”) held its first meeting in Tallahassee, Florida.

MSFH provides home inspections and mitigation grants to qualified single family homeowners.

The purpose of the Council will be to provide oversight of MSFH and recommend program changes, if necessary.

The first Council meeting was primarily organizational in nature.  Florida Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) Alex Sink addressed the Council and stressed the importance of hurricane mitigation as part of the solution to Florida’s insurance crisis.  She also noted that some homeowners are seeing reduced insurance costs just by having their homes inspected through the provisions of MSFH.  CFO Sink added that modeling companies need to be informed about Florida’s building codes.

Tami Torres, MSFH Special Program Administrator, discussed the Council’s statutory obligations and introduced Chip Thurber, Florida Department of Financial Services Assistant General Counsel, who provided an overview of Florida’s sunshine and public records laws.

Ms. Torres provided a status report on MSFH activities, during which she and the Council members engaged in an open dialogue regarding the MSFH program.
