South Broward Hospital Commissioner Kathy Durham to be Honored at Florida Breast Health Initiative’s First Annual Fundraiser

Chaired by Maria Elena Abate, March 28 Event Draws Major Sponsors

South Broward Hospital District Commissioner Kathy Durham will be honored on March 28, 2008 by the Florida Breast Health Initiative (“FBHI”) at its first major fundraising event at Don Shula’s Hotel in Miami Lakes.

Chaired by Maria Elena Abate, a shareholder with the law firm of Colodny Fass, the event will recognize Commissioner Durham as part of Memorial Hospital’s provision of services enabling FBHI to expand its door-to-door neighborhood outreach effort.  Commissioner Durham is also a breast cancer survivor.

FBHI, whose volunteers walk door-to-door in an effort to educate poor and underserved women about breast cancer treatment, received a boost in resources with the provision of Memorial Hospital’s “Mobile Mammography Van.”   The van enables FBHI volunteers to provide free mammograms and other breast health services at the point of contact in the targeted neighborhood.

“Throughout my own recovery, I thought about those who were losing their fight with breast cancer because they did not detect a problem early enough and lacked access to available treatment,” explained FBHI Founder Andrea Ivory, herself a breast cancer survivor, “Memorial’s resources have helped us not only to reach more women, but to help them right away, and close to home.”

“Quite literally, a knock on the door can save a woman’s life,” Abate remarked.

Thus, the FBHI March 28 event is dubbed the “Open the Door.”

Additional “Open the Door” honorees include the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Miami Alumni Chapter and Charlene Thomas, a recent breast cancer survivor and dedicated FBHI volunteer.

The event, a cocktail reception and silent auction, is scheduled to take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person.
