Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon Requests Insurer Assistance in Disseminating National Flood Insurance Program Claims Information; Preventative Measures May Be Reimbursed

May 20, 2011

With the Mississippi floodwaters invading the State of Louisiana, Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon has asked insurers for assistance in communicating the following important National Flood Insurance Program (“NFIP”) information to policyholders with flood coverage:

  • The NFIP may reimburse residents up to $1,000 for preventative measures taken, such as sandbags, supplies and labor for property removed to safety.
  • Insured property must be stored in a fully enclosed building and is covered for 45 consecutive days from the date its moving to that location commenced.
  • Residents should keep all receipts and submit them to their claims adjuster in order to receive reimbursement.
  • In preparation of filing a flood insurance claim, residents should have their insurance policy, inventory of their contents, all receipts and photos of damaged items (if possible).

Commissioner Donelon’s update is attached for review.
