House Government Operations Appropriations Committee Reviews My Safe Florida Home Program

Feb 3, 2009

The Florida House of Representatives Government Operations Appropriations Committee (“Committee”) met this morning, February 3, 2009, and discussed the My Safe Florida Home Program (“MSFH”) as part of its agenda.

A presentation from MSFH Program Director Tammy Torres indicated that the Florida Legislature had appropriated $250 million for MSFH and $175.7 million of that has been spent to date.

In response to Representative Alan Williams’ inquiry, Ms. Torres stated that nearly all of MSFH’s implementation was in coastal, versus inland territories.

Chairman Alan Hays spoke about the importance of hardening roofs, rhetorically stating:  “Why protect the windows if the roof is weak?”  He also spoke favorably about MSFH, which he looks forward to perpetuating.  (It should be noted, however, that Florida’s declining budget outlook likely will keep MSFH funding sources scarce.)
