The Heartland Institute issued the following on May 12, 2010:
TALLAHASSEE–A policy analyst at The Heartland Institute today praised Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty for supporting property and casualty insurance reform.
McCarty has encouraged Gov. Charlie Crist to sign Senate Bill 2044, a reform package authored by Sen. Garrett Richter (R-Naples) that would leave most of Florida’ regulatory system intact while making it easier for insurers to incorporate risk and cost factors into their rates. According to Christian Cámara, director of the Florida office of Heartland’s Center on Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate, the bill would benefit consumers by increasing the stability of Florida’s insurance companies and, indirectly, discouraging development in environmentally sensitive areas.
“I commend Commissioner McCarty for backing these necessary reforms,” said Cámara. “Although much more needs to be done, this bill would address many of the issues currently facing Florida’s property insurance system and is a step in the right direction.”
