Governor Files Opposition Response to House Petition Seeking Gambling Compact Invalidation

Dec 3, 2007

Governor Charlie Crist, in conjunction with the Seminole Tribe of Florida filed a response today opposition to the Florida Supreme Court petition for writ of quo warranto filed last week by the Florida House of Representatives to declare invalid the Seminole Indian gambling compact recently signed by the Governor.

The Governor’s response, a copy of which is attached, states in part:

“The Governor has a paramount constitutional duty to faithfully execute the law applicable in Florida.  This duty is not abrogated where, as here, federal law applies and the role of the State is narrowly confined.  Thus, but negotiating and signing a gaming compact which provides significant benefit to the State and avoids untoward consequences, the Governor acted responsibly, properly and solely within the bounds of his authority as chief executive.”
