Florida Office of Insurance Regulation Warns of Policy Cancellation Scam

Sep 8, 2016

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (“OIR”) and the Department of Financial Services (“DFS”) advised today, September 8, 2016, that they have been made aware of a scam involving the unauthorized use of Florida Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier’s name and position.

A fraudulent email, appearing to be sent from Commissioner Altmaier, has been sent to consumers, notifying that all of the recipient’s insurance policies have be cancelled.

The OIR emphasized that it does not send notices of cancellation and those who receive this email should disregard the information.  Consumers should not click on any links contained with the email message, and should immediately delete the email.

Instead, consumers should report this scam and all fraudulent activity to the DFS Insurance Consumer Helpline by calling 1 (877) 693-5236.

Consumers can also utilize this helpline to speak directly with insurance experts who can assist consumers with the filing of post-storm claims and answer any insurance-related questions.
