Aug 31, 2009

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (“OIR”) recently issued an informational memorandum detailing 2009 changes to Florida law relating to Medicare supplement insurance as a result of the passage of House Bill 675, also known as the “Alonzo Mourning Access to Care Act.”

The bill extends open enrollment rights and requires insurers issuing Medicare supplement policies in Florida also to offer coverage to individuals under age 65 years of age and who are eligible for Medicare by reason of disability or end-stage renal disease.  To view the complete OIR memorandum, click here.

The initial 6-month enrollment period begins October 1, 2009 for those eligible individuals under age 65 who are disabled or have end-stage renal disease.
