Florida Insurance Commissioner Selection Deferred Again at Today’s Cabinet Meeting

Apr 26, 2016

Selection of a new Florida Insurance Commissioner was deferred once again at the Florida Cabinet meeting today, April 26, 2016.

American Traditions Insurance Company General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Ray Blacklidge and Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (“OIR”) Chief of Staff Belinda Miller were interviewed by Cabinet members late this morning as additional finalists joining State Representative Bill Hager and former federal insurance regulator and Zurich executive Jeffrey Bragg, who were the initial selections earlier this month.

Florida Governor Rick Scott appeared steadfast in his support for Mr. Bragg, however, he suggested adding OIR Deputy Commissioner for Property and Casualty David Altmaeir, as well as OIR Life and Health Deputy Commissioner Rich Robleto to the slate of finalists.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater indicated his interest in Ms. Miller as a potential alternate selection to his initial choice of Representative Hager.

The Cabinet will reconvene this Friday, April 29 in another attempt to select a new Insurance Commissioner.  Cabinet members were invited to suggest additional applicants to those already under consideration.

For Cabinet members unable to attend this Friday in person, the meeting will be open to their telephonic attendance.

It was noted during today’s discussion that the 2016 Hurricane Season begins June 1.
