Florida House General Government Policy Council Meeting Report: March 17

On Tuesday, March 17, 2009, the Florida House General Government Policy Council (“Council”) met and considered House Bill 903 relating to Workers’ Compensation Attorneys’ Fees. A summary of the discussion and action is below.

By a vote of 14-4, the Council passed HB 903 relating to Workers’ Compensation Attorneys’ Fees by State Representative Flores with a strike-all amendment intended to fix ambiguities in current Florida statutes regarding workers’ compensation attorney’s fees as interpreted by the Supreme Court of Florida in Emma Murray v. Mariner Health.
Representative Jim Waldman (D-Coconut Creek) offered two substitute amendments: one to streamline the mediation process; the other to eliminate expense ratings. The amendments were considered by the Council, but not adopted.
Following discussion and public testimony, the strike-all amendment, which was introduced by Representative Flores, was adopted and HB 903 was passed by the Council.
