Florida Governor Rick Scott Shops for School Supplies at Lauderhill Staples Store, then Donates Items to Children’s Services Council of Broward County for Back-to-School Community Extravaganza

The Office of Florida Governor Rick Scott issued the following news release today, August 3, 2012:

Shop for School Supplies During Sales Tax Holiday

Families can save money on school supplies, clothes Friday through Sunday

Lauderhill, Florida – Governor Rick Scott shopped for school supplies at a Lauderhill Staples today and donated them to the Children’s Services Council of Broward County for their Back to School Community Extravaganza.  The supplies will be given to students in Broward County who need them during the upcoming school year.

“I encourage parents and families throughout Florida to save money this weekend by shopping for the tax-free school supplies their children need in order to succeed in the classroom,” Governor Scott said. “Getting ready for a new school year can be expensive, and getting a tax break will help families stretch their hard-earned dollars.”

Throughout the weekend, Floridians will be able to purchase specific school supplies, clothing and footwear without paying state and local sales taxes.  The tax exemption applies to specific items of clothing and footwear that cost $75 or less, as well as certain school supplies that cost $15 or less.  Shoppers and retailers can find a list of tax-exempt items by visiting the Florida Department of Revenue’s website at http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/, in the “Current Topics” box.

Florida’s 2012 Sales Tax Holiday began at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 3, and will end at midnight on Sunday, August 5.  Economists estimate the tax break will save Florida families approximately $31.8 million.
