Below is a brief synopsis of results from several high-profile Florida races:
A wave of Republican momentum, partially attributed to Democratic antipathy, provided Florida Republicans with a U.S. Senate victory, as well as total control of the Cabinet and a veto-proof majority in the State Senate and House of Representatives.
U.S. Senate
In the U.S. Senate race, Republican Marco Rubio defeated Florida Governor Charlie Crist and U.S. Representative Kendrick Meek–both considered to be viable challengers–with just under 50 percent of the vote.
U.S. Congress
Nationwide, Republicans won control of the U.S. House of Representatives from the Democrats, with U.S. Representative John Boehner to be the next Speaker of the House. However, the Democratic Party retained control of the U.S. Senate.
Florida’s Congressional delegation will now consist of 19 Republicans and six Democrats, with Republicans gaining four seats as a result of this election.
Florida Governor and Florida Cabinet
Republican Rick Scott defeated Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink in a race that was too close to call until the morning after the election.
Conversely, Republican candidates dominated the races for Florida Cabinet positions. Republican State Senator Jeff Atwater defeated former Democratic State Representative Loranne Ausley to become Florida’s next Chief Financial Officer, earning approximately 57 percent of the vote.
Republican Pam Bondi, who defeated State Senator Dan Gelber in the race for Florida Attorney General with approximately 55 percent of the vote, will be Florida’s first female Attorney General.
U.S. Representative Adam Putnam defeated former Florida Democratic Party chairman Scott Maddox, by approximately 56 percent of the vote to become Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Florida Legislature
After gaining two seats in the Senate for a 28-12 advantage and gaining five seats in the House for an 81-39 advantage, Republicans will now have a veto-proof majority in the Florida Legislature.
