Flooding Prompts Governor to Declare State of Emergency in Central Florida
May 22, 2009
Florida Governor Charlie Crist declared a State of Emergency today, May 22, due to severe storms and flooding in the State counties of Brevard, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Lake, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns and Volusia. The Governor’s Executive Order 09-126 making the official declaration is attached.
Florida Division of Emergency Management Interim Director Ruben Almaguer is presently in Volusia County, where he is working with local emergency-management crews to review damages to homes, property and public facilities. Governor Crist has informed newly-appointed Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate of the situation and is keeping him apprised. Mr. Fugate is also in Florida today with United States Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to expedite hurricane preparedness efforts.
A flood warning is in effect through 8:00 p.m. tonight in Volusia, where estimates from this week’s damages are more than $50 million. Lake, Seminole and Orange counties are under a flood watch through 8:00 p.m. The storm system over the Gulf of Mexico will keep generating storms that could develop tornadoes and waterspouts along the coastal zone, according to weather reports.
