Note: You are receiving this update as an invitee of the State of the Florida Insurance Market Summit.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director W. Craig Fugate will be the keynote speaker for the 2015 State of the Florida Insurance Market Summit, event sponsors Colodny Fass, Guy Carpenter and the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) confirmed today, October 28, 2014.
The three-day Summit, which attracts annual attendance of over 700 top global insurance industry executives, along with a slate of state insurance commissioners, regulators and legislators, is scheduled for January 14-16, 2015 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Florida’s beachfront Amelia Island.
Director Fugate will address Summit attendees on Thursday, January 15
“More often than not, FEMA is at the center of major pressing insurance and emergency management issues like National Flood Insurance Program reform, Ebola response and the federal government’s push toward not only mitigation, but resiliency in national disaster response and rebuilding efforts,” said Colodny Fass managing partner Mike Colodny, whose firm co-founded the Summit nearly a decade ago in conjunction with global reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter and PCI.
Confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2009, Director Fugate began his service as FEMA Administrator after having served as Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management and Florida State Coordinating Officer for 11 Presidentially-declared disasters including the management of $4.5 billion in federal disaster assistance.
In 2004, Director Fugate managed the largest federal disaster response in Florida history as four major hurricanes impacted the state in quick succession, followed by Hurricane Katrina, which prompted Florida to launch the largest mutual aid response in its history in support of the Gulf States under his leadership.
At FEMA, Director Fugate has taken a “shared responsibility” approach to emergency management, instituting a variety of catastrophe response programs that include partnerships at all levels of government and the community. His long-term leadership experience handling Florida disaster response, emergency management and planning was largely viewed as top-level training for his national FEMA post.
Director Fugate is a Florida native, hailing from Gainesville.
“The insurance industry’s annual turnout at our Summit is a testament to its recognition that, how Florida goes, usually so goes the world,” Mr. Colodny explained.
