Florida governor, focus on economy, wins 2nd term

Scott, one of the nation’s most vulnerable incumbents, narrowly won re-election Tuesday after turning back former Republican Governor Charlie Crist, who was trying to return to office as a Democrat.  He edged Crist by a margin of 48 percent to 47 percent.  Associated Press’ Gary Fineout and Brendan Farrington report for the Tampa Tribune.

 

Republicans Sweep Florida Cabinet Races

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam all easily defeated their Democratic opponents Tuesday, positioning them for possible runs for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2018.  Associated Press’ Jason Dearen reports via the Tampa Tribune.

Senator Thrasher’s resignation could spawn other special elections

State Representative Travis Hutson has said he would run for John Thrasher’s Senate seat. That opens Hutson’s seat.  And State Representative Ronald Renuart, who represents northern St. Johns County, is also planning a run for the Thrasher seat.  That means there will be at least three special elections, not counting primaries, FlaglerLive.com reports.

 

Voters Snuff Out Medicinal Marijuana Initiative, Falls 2.5 Percentage Short Of Passage

An attempt to allow doctors to use marijuana to treat patients with debilitating diseases went up in smoke Tuesday.  As recent as late September, it appeared that voters would give Amendment 2 the 60-percent approval needed for passage. Florida voters have rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have changed which governor chooses certain future Supreme Court justices and appellate judges.
