The Broward League of Cities celebrated the holiday season for a good cause, holding its holiday event at Young At Art Museum (YAA). Elected officials and associate members brought unwrapped toys in support of the museum’s ArtREACH program, a nationally recognized program providing after-school, arts-based experiences and homework assistance for children who reside in homeless shelters in Broward County.

Representatives of Broward County‘s 31 municipalities, including Broward League of Cities president and Coral Springs Mayor Roy Gold, mingled in an atmosphere of good cheer while participating in arts projects and tours throughout the various exhibits at YAA.

“We thank Young At Art Museum for graciously opening their doors to us and showcasing their wonderfully creative programs,” said Mayor Gold, who presented the museum with an overflowing box of toys. “Young At Art Museum is not only a wonderful program offering children an artistic outlet and learning tool, but a valued community partner providing programs to underserved and often overlooked youth. We at Broward League of Cities are happy to support them.”

The museum is currently in the midst of construction on the new 55,000-square-foot, LEED-certified Young At Art Museum and Broward County Children’s Reading Center. A model for museums nationwide, the new Young At Art shifts the paradigm of arts education from learning about art to using art for learning.

“We always welcome the opportunity to open our museum to the community and particularly to the Broward League of Cities and its members,” said Mindy Shrago, executive director of YAA. “We appreciate their generosity, especially during this time of year.”

Originally chartered in 1957, The Broward League of Cities is a non-partisan, nonprofit membership organization, welcoming representation from all of Broward’s 31 municipalities. Members work together to promote awareness of municipal services, concerns and accomplishments. Supporting the educational endeavors of students who plan to seek a career in municipal government is aligned with the league’s belief that by working together on common goals, municipalities can be more successful in resolving the issues affecting the welfare of Broward County residents at the local, state and federal levels, particularly in challenging times.
