Broward County Public Schools issued the following news release today, August 21, 2012:
Broward County Public Schools First Day Head Count
Broward County Public Schools welcomed back 236,170 students on the first day of school Monday, August 20. The District’s overall enrollment count increased by 1,333 students from last year’s first day count of 234,837.
The first day head count at all pre-kindergarten through 12th grade schools and centers; not including charter schools on the first day was 204,632. This number represents a decrease of 2,896 when compared to last year’s first day count.
Enrollment reported on the first day at 89 charter schools, including 15 new charter schools, was 31,538 – an increase of 4,229 when compared to last year’s first day count of 27,309.
A total of 14,652 teachers were back at work, including 931 new teachers added to the roster. In comparison, the number of new teachers hired by the first day of school last year was 207. The District dedicated approximately $47 million to help address the state’s class size requirements and to begin restoring music and arts programs and physical education instruction, which suffered cuts in last year’s budget.
The District expects that enrollment will continue to rise to a projected 262,251 by its official 20th day count in mid-September.
