Alvin Davis Named Florida Teacher of the Year 2012

Following an evening of celebration, fun and the recognition of Florida’s leading teachers, Alvin Davis, a music teacher from Miramar High School, was selected as the Florida Department of Education/Macy’s 2012 Teacher of the Year.

In addition to being named Florida Teacher of the Year, Davis will serve as the Christa McAuliffe Ambassador for education during the 2011/12 school year where he will visit schools throughout Florida to share information about educational opportunities and challenges in the state.

“Our teachers are the most influential factor in the education of our students and their successes have the unique capacity to shape the future of our children and the nation,” said Education Commissioner John L. Winn.  “Mr. Davis’ dedication to empowering Florida students to reach their goals is a testament to this capacity, and I am honored to recognize him as the 2012 Teacher of the Year.”

Additionally, Davis will represent the Sunshine State in the national Teacher of the Year awards program and will receive a cash prize of $10,000 from Macy’s, $1,000 for his school, a customized trophy and an all-expense paid trip to New York City for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Westglades Middle School Design Team Takes First Place in National SECME Competition

Westglades Middle School design team – James McLaughlin, Malachi Webb and Kendy Calixte – took first place in the national SECME (Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics Enhancement Program) Engineering Design Competition held at the University of Alabama in late June.

Earlier in the year, the Westglades design team placed first in the Broward County regional competition.  Their strong regional performance entitled them to participate in the final national Engineering Design Competition, held as one of the capstone events at the Annual SECME Summer Institute.

The national winner was selected based upon a combination of car performance, engineering drawings, technical reports and group interviews.

“Our student team worked very hard on this design,” said Miderland Alexis, Westglades Middle School SECME program coordinator. “We knew they had a great design after the regional competition, but we never dreamed we would be the national winner!” According to Chris Kohnke, SECME coordinator for BCPS,  “a total of 13 middle schools competed locally in the design event. Students designed, built and demonstrated their final projects. The Westglades design was truly innovative.”
