Future of the Wholesale Insurance Market

Legislative & Regulatory Panel Podcast Now Available

Two weeks after the historical presidential and congressional election, and in the wake of the federal government’s bailout of several financial institutions, the AAMGA was privileged to convene a select group of wholesale insurance industry experts to provide their views on the consequences of these developments, and on what it means for our marketplace.

The AAMGA’s Fall Insurance and Legislative Roundtable Meeting convened a panel forum of a White House and Capitol Hill Lobbyists, representative of the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers; a state legislator; a state insurance department and legislative lobbyists; and a representative from the pre-eminent insurance rating agency, AM Best. The panel reviewed a wide range of topics and took questions on issues including:

  • The priorities the new president and his administration will address
  • The future of federal insurance regulation, the “Optional” Federal Charter, and appointment of a federal insurance regulator
  • The future of state based federal regulation of insurance
  • The future of the wholesale insurance market
  • Changes rating agencies are making in their protocols and methodologies following the financial services and banking industry issues
  • Legal and legislative surplus lines issues in the states – including Florida
  • The future of the Non-admitted Insurance and Reinsurance Reform Act
  • The success of grassroots campaign initiatives
  • How will the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the National Council of State Legislatures and the National Council of Insurance Legislators respond to the new dynamics on the state and federal levels
